One of Mauritius’ Best-Kept Secrets: The Island’s Value Villages

Why Some Communities Call Themselves the Village of Tolerance, Understanding, Peace and Friendship

Most visitors arrive in Mauritius expecting turquoise lagoons, white sand beaches and luxury resorts.

Few expect to discover villages that proudly describe themselves as the Village of Tolerance, the Village of Understanding, the Village of Friendship or the Village of Peace.

I certainly didn't.

One afternoon, while driving through northern Mauritius, I noticed a roadside sign welcoming visitors to a village known as Village de la Compréhension, the Village of Understanding.

A few days earlier I had driven through another community proudly identifying itself as the Village de la Tolérance. At first I assumed these were isolated examples. The more I travelled, however, the more I realised that they formed part of a fascinating tradition that very few guidebooks ever mention.

It made me wonder. Why would a village choose to be known not for its scenery, its industries or even its history, but for a human value?

The answer reveals something rather special about Mauritius.

A Different Way of Defining a Community

Around the world, towns often promote themselves as the birthplace of a famous person, the home of a particular industry, or the location of a historic event.

In Mauritius, some communities appear to have chosen a different path.

Unlike village signs in many countries, which often celebrate industries, famous residents or tourist attractions, these Mauritian signs celebrate ideas, tolerance, understanding, friendship, harmony and peace.

Whether they reflect local history, community aspirations or a broader civic initiative, they invite visitors to think about a village in terms of values rather than landmarks.

That is a remarkably refreshing idea.

An Island Built by Many Peoples

Mauritius has always been a meeting place.

Its population traces its roots to Africa, India, China and Europe. Hindu temples, Catholic churches, mosques and Chinese pagodas can often be found within a short distance of one another. Multiple languages are spoken every day, while different religious and cultural festivals are celebrated across the island.

Like every nation, Mauritius has faced social and political challenges throughout its history.

Yet one of its defining strengths has been its long-term commitment to peaceful coexistence between communities with very different backgrounds.

Perhaps it should not be surprising, then, that some villages choose to identify themselves through values that encourage people to live together rather than divide them.

The Beginning of a Personal Journey

Since moving to Mauritius, I have become increasingly curious about these village signs.

Every time I drive somewhere new, I now find myself watching for another one.

Each sign raises new questions.

  • Why was this value chosen?
  • Who decided upon it?
  • Does it reflect the village's history?
  • Or is it simply an aspiration that residents hope future generations will embrace?

Surprisingly, there appears to be no comprehensive guide documenting these communities.

That is what inspired this article.

The Value Villages We Have Discovered So Far

This is an evolving project. As we continue travelling around Mauritius, we will add confirmed villages, photographs and local stories to this list.

More Than Words on a Sign

The more I thought about these village names, the more I realised they represent qualities that every society hopes to encourage.

  1. Tolerance does not require everyone to agree. It requires people with different beliefs, backgrounds and traditions to respect one another enough to live peacefully together.
  2. Understanding goes a step further. It asks us to listen before judging, and to appreciate another person's perspective before dismissing it.
  3. Friendship reminds us that communities are strengthened not only by infrastructure and economic growth, but by the relationships between neighbours.
  4. Peace is often described as the absence of conflict. Perhaps these villages suggest something richer: peace as a daily choice to cooperate, communicate and respect one another.
  5. Hope is one of the quiet foundations of community life. It reflects the belief that tomorrow can be better than today, and that a village can build something meaningful for the next generation.
  6. Solidarity suggests that a community is more than a collection of households. It is a shared commitment to help one another, especially during difficult times.
  7. Harmony does not eliminate differences. Instead, it recognises that different cultures, traditions and beliefs can contribute to something stronger when they exist together.
  8. Welcome is more than politeness. It is the spirit of making others feel that they are not merely passing through, but being received with warmth and dignity.
  9. Brotherhood speaks to a deeper sense of belonging. It suggests that neighbours are not strangers who happen to live near one another, but members of a wider human family.
  10. Respect may be the value that holds all the others together. Without respect, tolerance becomes fragile, understanding becomes shallow, and peace becomes difficult to maintain.

These values may seem simple. In today's increasingly divided world, however, they are anything but ordinary.

A Tradition Worth Preserving

It is easy to overlook a roadside sign while driving to the beach.

Yet these simple signs tell an important story. They quietly remind residents and visitors alike that a community can choose to define itself by character rather than commerce.

That may be one of Mauritius' most understated strengths.

This Is Only the Beginning

Over the coming months, I hope to visit many more of these communities.

If you know of a village that celebrates a particular value, or if you know the story behind one of these signs, please get in touch.

Together, we may be able to document one of the island's most fascinating cultural treasures, one village at a time.
